Judicial decision threatens WordPress in Brazil

A decision by a judge of the 31st Civil Court of São Paulo can block the access of Brazilian internet users to the blog site WordPress.com. To do the embargo on a page hosted on the site, in compliance with judicial determination, providers may have to prohibit all access to the portal.

According to Abranet (Brazilian Association of Internet Providers), the Justice of São Paulo sent a statement for the institution to determine that its associates would block access to a blog with criminal content. However, according to Abranet, it is not possible to prohibit Internet users from using only one page.

" This kind of procedure is very complicated. You don't do the specific block for a blog. It is necessary to restrict IP access (internet protocol) as a whole. What our associates are putting forward is that this can happen, to make everything unavailable," says Eduardo Parajo, CEO of Abranet.

According to Parajo, providers want to avoid a "new Cicarelli case". In January of last year, a court decision caused the temporary blocking of YouTube in Brazil due to the video display of host Daniella Cicarelli in intimate scenes on a beach.

"All of them [the providers] are moving towards complying with the court order, but we want to avoid a bigger case, as was the case in Cicarelli. At that time it happened just that," says Parajo. Currently, 90% of Brazilian netizens use the network by providers associated with Abranet.

Therefore, the president of the institution states that he has already fulfilled the judicial decision by informing the associates about the case. But he also sent a statement to the judge, reporting this technical question. The institution asks the Brazilian Justice to request the embargo directly to WordPress, which could only remove the blog with problems from the air.

The process runs in secret of justice in São Paulo. The blog name or the offence committed was not revealed.
