Microsoft is preparing to speak publicly and demonstrate Windows 7 at two conferences this year. But this does not mean that the Windows team will distribute the system in these events.
Many thought the company would distribute Windows 7 to those present at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in October or at least early November at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC). But according to sources linked to the company that have asked to remain anonymous, Microsoft must make Windows 7 Beta 1 available in mid-December.
A small and select group of testers have already put their hands on some Windows 7 builds. Microsoft has provided two milesstones (M1 and M2), as well as several intermediate builds, from Windows 7 to selected customers and partners. And according to inside information, the company is putting the finishing touches on M3.
But Beta 1? Microsoft plans do not include the availability of this build up to a week before Christmas.
